The generation of ecological sensitive environment basically is a consequence of the interaction between the nature and long-term human activities. The appropriate design of ecological sensitive area contributes the fundamental significance to the urban ecology, and also acts as an important route to sustain the city's continuous growth. As an international metropolis, Shanghai' urbanization process is quite predominant, but at the same time, undesirably brings forth the blind utilization of the downtown area. Generally speaking, to prevent the natural ecological system's unbalance and local environmental deterioration has been widely recognized as the key issue to keep Shanghai as an ecological city. The research presented by this dissertation has focused on the solution for above problems. Firstly we generalized some basic concepts about ecological sensitivity, and after that we used tools like the frequency statistics, theoretical analysis, expert consultant and filtering. In this way we constructed the evaluation system consisted of more than twenty standards including pressure factors and sensitive factors. Then we utilized the Delphi method and AHP analytical method to get a matrix for the evaluation. And then the following calculation turned out all these evaluation standards and influential factors' weightiness. At last we built up the model to evaluate the ecological area's sensitivity properly. At the same time the remote image of Shanghai area has been chosen as the main data source, and then estimated by the GIS technology. Finally a database for the Shanghai ecological environment's sensitivity came into-being to provide the service of inquiry and in-time evaluation. Then the distribution of these areas of different sensitivity in Shanghai has been carefully investigated The distribution shows two characteristics :(1)Distribute in an order structure from the interior to outside area. In the middle part of downtown, Baoshan, Jiading and Pudong new district, this trend was dominant for the sensitivity distribution. It was like a circle centered in the downtown and expand from the inner to outside, and we can easily distinguish that this distribution coincide well with the urban development. (2)The expansion from the main river. To originate and grow from the riverside was a consequence of the river's potential ecological significance. Nowadays the city's development had a big influence on the river due to the river's significance on the city, which resulted into its high level of sensitivity. However, the influence from the city on river was cyclic instead of uni-direct. As a result the sensitivity distribution near the river became heterogeneous because the city development had different direction and speed at different stages. Finally to make the results easier to be differentiated, the sensitivities in the Shanghai district have been sorted into five levels in term of: low, moderate low, medium, moderate high and high sensitivities. We analyzed the different area's spatial distribution, and then proposed the advice to improve its condition based on that.
