| Molding mechanization is mainly used in modern foundry industry. That requires more and more good quality molding sand which is reused in the process of production. Therefore, many foundry men devote themselves to find an accurate and rapid determination method for moisture of molding sand. Sensors using NIR reflectance technique are common in industrial use. However, this technique has not been used in foundry industry. The aim of this article is to show a new instrument for on-line determination moisture content of molding sand in foundry industry based on NIR spectrum. Sensors using NIR reflectance technique are common in industrial use, but have not been used in foundry industry. Based on discussion about all kinds of determination method for the molding sand moisture a new method with near infra-red spectrum has been presented, with the principle of the method and a test instrument designed. The use of the method in online determination for the molding sand moisture has been discussed. We also design the digital filter for this instrument and discuss the calibration process of this instrument aim at two kinds of molding sand. The moisture content range of this instrument is within 4% to 7%. The error range is within 0.2%. Data show that this is a untouched, rapid and high precise method, and can be used on the mechanized molding product line to determinate and control moisture content of molding sand timely.
