Detecting and controlling the moisture of molding sand precisely and rapidly is the key to the improvement of casting quality as well as the reduction of casting defective index. Meanwhile, it also has great significance for the transformation towards automation within the Foundry Industry. A new detecting technology based on NIR Spectrum has been utilized in a number of lines of business because of the exclusive advantages such as: High detecting speed, Great analysis efficiency, Non-contact measurement, Low cost, None pollution, Ability in on-line detection. However, this method has not been used in the detecting of molding sand moisture in the Foundry Industry.Based on the references and the discussion of the present status and the trend of development on the reflectance technique of NIR spectrum, a new method of using it on the detection of molding sand moisture has been presented. The feasibility is discussed from microscopic view. A test instrument is designed with the principle entitled"Lambert-Beer Law". We also design the optical system using the light filter, the circuit system to magnify the signal and eliminate the clutter and the software to measure and present data.In addition, in order to examine the functional mode of the instrument and the influence to the result and precision of it by different working conditions such as: the graininess of the molding sand, the measurement distance and the moisture of air. Result shows that this rapid and high precise method can be utilized on the mechanized molding product line to detect and control moisture content of molding sand timely.
