The image processing techniques are the core of the automatic welding robot visual seam tracking technology, it was studied in this paper. There are several steps in the procedure of image processing; the selection of the image processing methods is key to the results. on the basis of the classical imageprocessing methods, the innovative method-------orthogonal experimentaldesign was quoted in this paper to select the best image processing methods for the unwelding seams and the welded seams. The orthogonal experimental design can offer the theoretical bases for the selection of the image processing methods and using the orthogonal experimental design can get the best image processing results by doing a few of experiments. So the time of the image processing is shortened and the better image processing results are gotten.In the procedure of edge extracting, the Hough transform algorithm was modified. Using the modified Hough transform algorithm, the better and more correct welding seam features were gotten through the image processing experiments. The results proved that the run time of the modified Hough transform algorithm was greatly shortened, so the real-time application in the automatic welding robot is feasible.In the end, the left and the right edges of the welding seams were identified on the basis of the image processing and the modified Hough...
