Phenol is a sort of major raw material of chemical industry and also the main pernicious composition in industrial wastewaters, which leads to serious environmental pollution. Investigations of phenol wastewater treatment are significant task of environmental protection.Anaerobic wastewater biological treatment technology is a kind of low cost wastewater treatment technology which combines wastewater treatment with energy recovery. Prospects for the anaerobic wastewater treatment are extremely promising.Upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor is the most prosperous anaerobic biological treatment process which is being applied extensively to the treatment of various organic wastewaters at present. UASB reactor is a new type of biochemical anaerobic treatment reactor which merits development and applications.In this study, the reaction temperature of UASB reactor was increased from mesophilic temperature (37℃) to thermophilic temperature (55℃). The feasibility study for start-up of UASB reactor at thermophilic temperature by using granular sludge at mesophilic temperature is investigated. UASB reactor was used to degrade the wastewater containing phenol at thermophilic temperature. With glucose as the symbiotic substrate, the granular sludge was cultivated and domesticated by gradually increasing the concentration of phenol and decrease that of glucose. This study investigates the limiting concentration of phenol which UASB reactor could degrade and the activity of the granular sludge, discusses the operating performance of the UASB reactor at various volume loadings, and summarizes the optimum volume loading of degrading phenol. The result showes that, when the HRT is 30h, UASB reactor can degrade phenol at the concentration of 2310mg/L(namely 5500mgCOD/L), the corresponding volume loading is 6.6gCOD/(Ld). If the concentration exceeds this limiting value, the activity of granular sludge in the UASB reactor is seriously suppressed, and the UASB reactor is quite difficult to recover.Granular sludge can be cultivated in UASB reactor at thermophilic temperature.
