Phenolic wastewater is considered as a category of organic pollutants with the widest distribution and the largest effect in the water environment. The treatment of industrial phenolic wastewater has become one of the issues that must be resolved. Phenolic compounds are various in style, such as phenol, cresol, phenyle phenol, naphthol, chlorine phenol, etc. The most prominent phenolic compounds in pollution are phenol and cresol. The biological-chemical treatment is the most widely used at present in the wastewater treatment technologies, also is a main way to treat phenolic wastewater harmlessly in our country. Anaerobic biological treatment technology is a kind of low cost wastewater technology which combines treatment of wastewater with recyling of energy, so is extremely promising in the field of water pollution control. Upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor that has adapted well to all kinds of wastewater, is the most successful anaerobic biological treatment process now, and is a new type of anaerobic biological treatment reactor worthy of popularizing too.The temperature has great effect on the activity of anaerobic microorganism. With the development of new types of anaerobic reactors, the temperature influence on anaerobic digestion has become prominent no longer as a result of increase of biomss. In order to save energy consumption and operating cost, the anaerobic digestion is often carried on at ambient temperature even lower temperature condition. In this topic, two indentical laboratory-scale UASB reactors in design are utilized to study the feasibility of treating the synthetic wastewater containing phenol as sole organic substrate at ambient temperature. Compared with the operation conditions and removal effect at different temperature in UASB reactors tested previously, we can draw a conclusion that is optimum condition of treating phenol using UASB reactors. Results show that, compared with thermophilic UASB reactor, the operation of ambient UASB reactor is more stable because of good adaption to temperature shifts, organism changes, organic loading rate (OLR) changes and the toxicity. Moreover, the microorganism activity suppressed seviously can be resumed effectively at ambient temperature. Compared with mesophilic UASB reactor, the degration rate of ambient UASB reactor is lower, but the difference is negligible. Furthermore, the...
