In recent years, the search for environmentally more acceptable coatings hasbeen an important research topic all over the world. Because of the low volatileorganic compounds(VOC), waterborne coatings progressively have gained marketshare. But when used as industry coatings, waterborne coatings are usually inferiorto corresponding solvent-based counterparts, because of hydrophilic functionalgroups or surfactants which are introduced to impart dispersion stability in water tothese resins. In this study we have prepared core-shell type unsaturated fatty acidmodified acrylic-poly(epoxy-ester) and dry oil modified acrylic-polyurethane byself-emulsifying techniques. In these emulsions, their particle size is less than100nm and furthermore the emulsions are soapfree. Based on the soapfreenanoemulsions, we prepared waterborne steel protective primer and water bornesteel protective finish with superior performance which can compete withsolvent-based counterparts.Unsaturated fatty acid modified acrylic-poly(epoxy-ester) emulsions havebeen prepared by self-emulsifying techniques. The particle size that can be clearlyobserved by TEM micrograph is less than 100nm. The dry film properties werestudied by FT-IR and DSC. The results of these measurements support the idea thatpolyacrylate has grafted onto unsaturated fatty acid modified poly(epoxy-ester).And the extraction test indicates that the degree of grafting is very high, ranging in96 to 97%.We also prepared dry oil modified acrylic-polyurethane emulsions byself-emulsifying techniques.
