The electro-hydraulic hammer is a high and new technical product that substitutes the Pneumatic hammer. The hydraulic driving system is power unit and its characteristics can influence forging energy and forging frequency. There are some institutions including Forging Laboratory of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), Xi'an Laboratory of Heaven Machinery engaged in research and development of the hammer. The paper gives a description of the principle in the hydraulic driving system and gives qualitative and quantitative research both on striking process and return process of the hammer.Component modeling method is a proper tool for hydraulic system. With the help of the tool, a mathematics model of the whole system is established. In the course of modeling, such subordinate factors as short pipeline cubage are ignored. At the same time, we make assumption that the temperature of the oil is constant and the oil is ideal fluid. The mathematics model is ill-conditioning. We analyze the reason of the ill-conditioning problem.The software of Simulink is popular in modeling and simulation. It offers graphical user interface, simple and reliable. With the help of Simulink, the hydraulic system simulation model is established. Compared with the experimental data, the result shows that the five tons open-die forging hammer satisfies the working requirement and shows that the mathematics model and simulation model is feasible. The models set theoretic base for optimization of the hammer.The paper also analyzes the dynamical characteristics of the pressure-adjusting safe valve and optimizes it.
