Gear drive is the most fundamental in mechanical drives. Face gear(FG) drive has many unique advantages as a new type gear drive, especially in high power and high speed applications. This paper studies the generation of tooth profile of orthogonal-shaft FG, the computer simulation of the orthogonal-shaft FG's shaping process, the grinding principle of the orthogonal-shaft FG and the dressing method for the worm, to make a theoretical basis for the FG processing.The research on the generation of tooth profile of FG is made up of the derivation of the equations of FG tooth, contact lines and contact points on tooth in processing, and of the visualization of FG tooth surface, contact lines and contact points.The computer simulation of FG's shaping process is achieved using VB and AutoCAD secondary development on the basis of FG shaping process principle. This paper gives the modeling process for the involute gear shaper and FG blank, and the generating motion of FG processing is simulated, the FG model obtained.In this paper, the research is made on the grinding of the orthogonal-shaft FG and the dressing of the worm. The grinding principle of the orthogonal-shaft FG is given. The tooth profile of worm is formulated, and the worm surface is simulated. Two methods for the dressing of the worm are discussed.
