Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is a suitable machining option in meeting the demands of today's modern applications. It has been commonly used in the automotives, aerospace, mould, tool and die making industries. WEDM applications can also be found in the medical, optical, dental industries, and in the automotive and aerospace R&D areas. With the development of WEDM, the automatic programming system for WEDM is playing a more and more important role. In this paper, the wire path generation, NC simulation and the correlation of model and wire path are studied.1. The wire path generation of multiple-cut in 2-axis WEDM is researched. Then an algorithm named Virtual Wire Model is presented. With the algorithm, the wire path can be calculated. Based on the algorithm, the wire path of multiple-cut for the ruled surface is generated in 4-axis WEDM.2. A simulation module is developed, which is based on ACIS geometric engine and the conventional solid modeling. First the region swept by a wire in each move is generated based on the diameter of the wire, spark gap size and the paths. Then the overall geometry of the part is updated by means of Boolean operations. At last the simulation results are separated and displayed, and the treatment of the boundary contours intersection is investigated especially.3. To get higher production efficiency, the correlation of model and wire path is put forward. Based on the string attrib in ACIS, A module of regeneration the wire path and NC code is developed.
