According to the mechanism , olefin protonation is a process of acid-alkali reaction , so the reaction is easy to happen when the acidity of catalyst and the basicity of olefin are very strong . It is the reason of high selectivity of MTBE that mix C4 react with methanol to produce .Usually MTBE is a kind of compound that butene in C4 cut has additive reaction with methanol to get ,the reaction is a typical acid catalyst reaction. According to the theory ,in principle any strong acid substance can be used as MTBE catalyst .From current research and production application, used catalyst is mainly a strong acid macroporous cation exchange resin , also a general catalyst at present .It adopt styrene and divinylbenzene polymer as carrier ,the carrier proceed sulfonation to make strong acid macroporous cation exchange resin.
