As a very important material during continuous casting, mold powder takes a key role in increasing casting speed, stabilizing continuous casing process and improving quality of products. Because the mold powder has a great impact on the quality of steel and the condition of continuous casting, many metallurgists attach importance to the research of mold powder. This paper has been supported by Nan-Jing Iron & Steel group CO, the object is developed a mold powder adapt to broad slab. The following research works have been finished: Firstly, the effects of components on physical and chemistry properties, crystallization properties, and mine-configuration for mold powder were system analyzed. Secondly, by the study of liquid steel flow behaviors and temperature filed in the molds, the flow characteristic and the distributing of temperature in broad slab was got. Based on the researches above, the physical and chemistry properties index of the wide slab mold powder was suggested, and four mold powders were developed for broad slab. Moreover, the trials have been taken, and by analyzing the problems found in trials, the physical and chemistry properties of the mold powder has been optimized, which could meet the requirement of products quality and keep the processes of continuous casting in good conditions. The trials have indicated that the theoretics analyzing of the wide slab mold powder is agree with the practice results. The series of XCN mold powder could replace the import mold powder, which started a new stage for the broad slab mold powder development in our country.
