Highway tunnel is a relative obturate space, so the atmospheric diffusion process is limited and the air pollutants emitted by motor vehicles passing the tunnel cumulate up to a high level inside highway tunnel, depressing the air quality and endangering the safety of vehicles driving through the tunnel. In this paper, the focus is placed on the problem of air pollution in highway tunnel, and the prime purpose of highway tunnel's air quality protection is to make sure that it is healthy for human and safe for vehicles to pass through. At the beginning of this paper, we have an introduction of air pollution and its harmfulness inside highway tunnel, then the concentration limit level of CO, the air quality model in highway tunnel and sensitivity analysis of the model's parameters are conducted. On the basis of the model, the air pollutions in the Qinling Zhongnanshan highway tunnel are simulated.In this paper, we calculated the fraction of CoHb in human blood as a function of exposure time and CO concentration in the air breathed on the basis of the Coburn-Forster-Kane equation, and then the relationship between CO concentration upper limit and the time the vehicles passing through the highway tunnel is built up in order to make sure that the fraction of CoHb in human blood dose not exceed 2.0 percent. The result indicates that the CO concentration upper limit is 105ppm when the vehicles pass through the Qinling Zhongnanshan highway tunnel at the speed of 40km/h.According to the structural characteristics of the highway tunnel, an one-dimension numerical model for the concentration distribution of air pollutants inside highway tunnel is established based on the equation of atmospheric diffusion.
