Heat deformation of the machine tool spindle system is one main reason which affects the accuracy of the machining, so the heat design of the machine tool spindle system play an important role in designing the machine tool. Research of this area had been made more progress at home and abroad, but extent and deepness of theory and engineering application is not enough. Based on the"10th Five-Year Plan"project of"Developing the Five Axis High Bridge Type Gantry Machining Center"(No:BE2003035) and the"10th Five-Year Plan"project of"Developing the New High Precision Numerical Control Lathe"(No:BE2001068) funded by Jiangsu Province, the temperature field of the spindle system of machine tool, the mathematical model of heat deformation, creating thermodynamics model and correcting the model, calculating boundary conditions, optimal design of thermal characteristic were comprehensively and systemically studied. The main research content in the paper is listed in the following:1. The mathematics model of three-dimension temperature field of the machine tool spindle system is created, and based on elastic mechanics, basic equation of heat deformation and finite element theory, the mathematics model of heat deformation is built.2. The CAD model of parts and assembly of spindle system of two machine tools is built, and the finite element mesh and the heat conduct of interfaces are probed into, and the thermal characteristic finite element model of spindle system is built, these are the basis of CAE analysis and structure optimization design of thermal characteristic.3. Based on analyzing the internal heat source and boundary conditions of the spindle system of two machine tools, the finite element model of spindle system is built. The temperature field of the spindle system for CK1416 NC lathe is corrected and confirmed, it is the basis of calculating heat deformation and optimal design of thermal characteristic.4. Based on ensuring the restriction and heat load, the heat deformation of the spindle system for machine tools is fully analyzed, and the change of the deformation error of the spindle head for two machine tools is compared, the machining precision of machine tool which produced by deformation is showed by the change.5. The parametric model and structure optimal design of the spindle system of CK1416 NC lathe is put forward and carried out using the ANSYS optimal function with APDL parametric design language. The thermal characteristic and dynamic characteristic of the spindle system are improved successfully at the same time.The paper contributes to heat design and dynamic design of the machine tool spindle system.
