Under galvanostatic model using activated carbon fiber (ACF) as anode and cathode, the paired electrolysis for decolorization of Reactive Bule 19, one of anthraquinone dyes, and Amaranth, one of azo dyes, were studied in a divided and an undivided cell, respectively. The current density when the paired electrolysis acted were confirmed while a comparative study on dye removal load, energy consumption and dye removal equivalent of the two kinds of cells was undertaken to evaluate their performances. Moreover, the effects of initial concentration of dyestuff, supporting electrolyte (Na2SO4), pH and temperature on paired electrolysis for decoloration were investigated in an undivided cell. The results obtained show that the decolorization of dyes on ACF electrodes by paired electrolysis is feasible both in the divided and undivided cell.As for Reactive Blue 19: (1) in the range of 0.0 mA·cm-2 to 0.2 mA·cm-2, the performance of the two cells was equivalent (2) in the range of 0.3 mA·cm-2 to 0.9 mA·cm-2, the undivided cell is found to be superior than divided cell because of its structure (3) the paired electrolysis composed of direct anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction can be achieved in the range of 1.0 mA·cm-2 to 1.5 mA·cm-2.As for Amaranth: (1) in the range of 0.0 mA·cm-2 to 0.2 mA·cm-2, the performance of the two cells was equivalent (2) in the range of 0.3 mA·cm-2 to 0.5 mA·cm-2, the undivided cell is found to be superior than divided cell because of its structure (3) the paired electrolysis composed of direct anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction can be achieved in the range of 0.6 mA·cm-2 to 1.5 mA·cm-2.According to the study on effects of process conditions, it could be concluded that high initial concentration of dyestuff, supporting electrolyte, acidic and neutral conditions as well as moderate temperature are found to be favourable to enhanced performance of the cell.
