| As an important environmental management tool, life-cycle assessment methodology has been applied to and developed by the companies or governments abroad for about thirty years. LCA was adopted in many countries for determining the criteria of eco-labeling. It was also included in the ISO14000 series standards that relate to many focus issues in the international environment field such as environmental management system, environmental management audit, environmental sign and life-cycle assessment. Understanding and researching LCA approach are only infant in china.The key technique in the life-cycle assessment of municipal sewage treatment plant is how to apply methodology of LCA in sewage treatment techniques which regulated by ISO14040《Life Cycle Assessment-Principles and Framework》,ISO14041《Goal and Scope Definition and Inventory Analysis》,ISO14042《Life Cycle Impact Assessment》,ISO14043《Life Cycle Interpretation》.The LCA in wastewater treatment plant commonly consists of construction,operation and demolition. LCIA is the hardcore in LCA. The environmental impact of wastewater treatment works could be evaluated using the technique of LCA. Subject to satisfactory wastewater treatment and sludge, the LCA technique identified additional impacts of importance, which had implications for energy management, works design, supplier management and general environmental policy. The wastewater treatment works could be evaluated using the LCA technique to identify and quantify material use, energy use and environmental releases during construction, operation and demolition. And the general environmental impact includes resource reduction, energy consumption, pollution discharge and other impacts.This paper enabled a comparison of general environmental benefit to be made between two municipal sewage plants with different techniques processes, and the identification of opportunities for improvement, starting from the raw materials extraction, through manufacture to plant construction, treatment operation and plant demolition.The research objects are: Fuyang municipal sewage treatment plant and Malanhe sewage treatment plant of Dalian.
