Ansys was used in this paper to simulate the temperature field and stress field of the thickness steel. Geometry model of the butt joint was founded at the beginning of the research. Since multi-layer welding was usually used, the geometry model for three-layer welding was selected according to the process of welding. Different meshing principles were proposed to ensure higher efficiency with various aspects concerned. Using Guass heat source as the moving heat source of welding, the temperature field, which considered the temperature's influence on thermophysical properties, is founded, and the distributing principle of temperature field was attained. With the APDL parametric language, the process of solution was predigested.Also the temperature field was measured with the ThermalCAM TM P65.It was shown that the simulation results were in good accordance with the practical experiment. Therefore, simulation technology could be used in the production as guidance.On the basis of the thermal elastic dynamics, welding structure model was founded by coupling the temperature field and the structure field. Moreover, the paper did research on the simulation of the stress and distortion of the thickness steel. With the birth-death element method, the paper considered the nonlinear phenomena and the high temperature dynamics capability. And the APDL parametric language helps to predigest the process of solution.
