At present a majority of opencast mine in our country will change into the underground mining. But there are still many vital questions, which as follows, have to be confronted with: the dimension of tailing dam is inadequate, the confiscation of land for the new tailing dam is difficult, the investment of new tailing dam is high. Now the depleted worked-out section is still not exploited, because of its special situation to the underground mine section. In this paper, we profoundly study the practicability of utilizing the open worked-out section to reserve the tailing of the mine in local mine, and lay emphasis on the contribution to the stability of the tailing dam, after discharging the tailing into the open worked-out section. The subject investigated of this paper is Cheng jia-gou iron mine. According to the existing condition of hydrological geology and worked-out section, we bring forward a scheme that utilizing the open worked-out section to reserve the tailing of the mine in Cheng jia-gou . We analysis contributions of seepage field, stress field, coupled field to the stability of the tailing dam by the means of numerical simulation and the software of ANSYS finite element. Accordingly, we also research the manners of preventing the infiltration flow. At the same time, we exploit the subsystem of general service model, which is characterized by its brevity, high efficiency and general service. The study has the important significance of reducing the land of gangue impoundment, decreasing the expense of discharging the gangue and strengthening the environment protection of the mine in the circs that our country hasn't enough land. The study in this paper is the most important foundation to the technology of utilizing the open worked-out section to reserve the tailing of the mine.
