The sensitivity of the application of on-line chromatographic pre-concentration as analytical method may be increased by increasing pre-concentration volume which dose not overrun breakthrough volumes. However, Increasing pre-concentration volume inevitably result in the matrixs which are hardly eliminated interfere the determination results, especially being detected very low concentrations of the solution.This paper presents the analytical method of on-line chromatographic pre-concentration for the highly sensitive detection of carbaryl in natural water based on series of tests that were carried out to eliminate the matrix hard interferences on ultra-trace level carbaryl.The matrix serious interferences on 0.04μg/L level carbaryl was eliminated by optimizing chromatographic condition. The origin of the hard interferences matrix in redistilled water and the three days after peak of reason for chromatography were found. The parameters of on-line pre-concentration such as breakthrough volumes and quantities, flow rate, reproducibility are also discussed. It is found that the redistilled water can not be used after 2 days.Detection limit of carbaryl of 0.006μg/L are obtained at 223 nm.correlation coefficients of carbaryl are higer than 0.9994. In natural water, the concentration of was detected in a ditch near by Chengdu University of Technology. Recoveries of carbaryl were between 83.0% and 110%, And reproducibilities and repeatabilities of two pesticides are fit the EU Council Directive EC/98/83 well.In general, the on-line chromatographic pre-concentration technique is simple, rapid, accurate and economical. It also provides a powerful tool for the analysis aqueous environmental samples. If a good choice of the preconcentration parameters and a good selection of the analytical conditions are made, the lower level determinations can be performed for the many pesticides.
