The purpose of this paper based on the theory of the mold powder is to study and develop low-carbon and free-carbon mold powder in continuous casting in order to solve the problem of its importation. According to the mold powders made in Japan which are used in Benxi and Wuhan iron-steel company, under the condition of low or free carbon, the mold powders are confected.The results of this study showed that:(1)Appending graphite and active carbon to the basic material, melting rate decreases with the increase of carbon content, with the argon- atmosphere or with the pervasion of carbon. Graphite is slower than active carbon in mold powder.(2)Appending oxidant to the low-carbon powder, melting rate increases notability, oxidant can burn off the carbon in the powder.(3) Appending the reducer to the low-carbon powder, the melting rate decreases.(4)Appending paper-fibre to the low-carbon powder, melting rate decreases.(5)Appending carbide of different granularity to the low-carbon powder, melting rate decreases, and granularity of carbide is bigger than granularity of the mold powder, it can't control melting rate.(6) Appending carbonate to the low-carbon powder, melting rate has different changes with the different carbonate.(7)Appending nitride to the low-carbon and free-carbon powder, in order to prevent the oxidation of the nitride, the reducer must be appended or the menstruation must be in the argon-atmosphere. Melting rate decreases with the increase of nitride content, decreasing in the argon-atmosphere, appending reducer and in the air in turn.(8)Appending carbide to the basic material, it can't reach the need of production and control the melting rate, so it must append some carbon.This results of this study and the mold powders of importation have the approximate melting temperature, melting rate and viscidity, which have more directive significances in more research of low-carbon and free-carbon mold powder in continuous casting and their realization made in our country.
