Controllable synthesis of supramolecules and coordination polymers with predesigned structures and functionalities are of great interest due to their intriguing topologies and potential applications in material science. Recently the functional bi- or polynuclear units as building blocks have been employed to construct coordination polymers, especially low-dimensional polymers, the key step is to design and prepare a suitable building block precursor. Up to now, there is no report to deal with a relation of orientation of one dimensional coordination polymer chains with their physical properties, and how to control the orientations of one-dimensional coordination polymers still remains to be explored. On the basis of the previous work in our the laboratory, we designed and syntheized a new dinuclear copper complex [Cu2(μ-PhPPy2)2(CH3CN)2](ClO4)2, which has linear and rigid structures. In this complex, the axialy coordinated ligands, acetonitrile molecules are quite active, and easy to be replaced by other ligands. In this work, two dicarboxylates with different geometries, disodium isophthalate and terephthalate are utilized to react with [Cu2(PhPPy2)2(CH3CN)2](ClO4)2 to afford two coordination polymers, {[Cu2(μ-PhPPy2)2](μ-1,3-C6H4(COO)2)}∞(1) and {[Cu2(μ-Ph -PPy2)2](μ-1,4-C6H4(COO)2)}∞(2), respectively. X-ray crystallographic studies reveals that both 1 and 2 adopt almost similar one-dimensional structures. Interestingly in solid state, the orientations of polymeric chains for 1 are parallel to each other; but in 2, the polymeric chains are crossed with the angle (42o), although polymeric chains are parallel in one layer. Finally it is proposed that possibly the distances between two neighboring [Cu2(μ-PhPPy2)2] units is an important factor to control the alignment of polymeric chains. The result we have gotten provides a new approach to synthesize low dimensional coordination polymers.
