The design and manufacturing of panel dies play an important role in the development of automobiles. With wide application in panel die industry, CAD software has greater and greater influence on the time and quality of design and manufacturing of dies. In practice, there exist many problems in traditional CAD system. For example, it is difficult to edit parameters interactively, and the design is hard to use efficiently in die manufacturing, and so on. Therefore, development of special CAD software for panel dies based on a general CAD system is a good solution.Through analyzing the structure of the dies and the procedure of die design, design methods and principles, functions and structure, and key techniques of 3D CAD system of panel dies are studied.Surface simplification and offsetting are key issues of panel die CAD system. These problems are solved through surface re-construction based on point cloud and Z-direction iteration. A curve & surface processing module is developed.Based on the topological similarity of the die structures, a standard part library and a structure auto-building program library have been developed to reduce the work of designers.A 3D die design CAD system for panel dies has been developed on the platform of UG based on above mentioned techniques, which includes corresponding modules, such as project initialization, process features/die structure mapping, concept design, curve & surface processing, standard part library and structure auto-building program library, and so on.
