With the development of modern weapon, the capability of explosive has been improved and advanced. In order to meet the small size requirement of initiators and pyrotechnics, small size explosive is often adopted to deliver explosion wave in the design of exploding sequence. For example, detonation networks are entirely made up of small size explosive. Compared with big size explosive, the transmittance of small size explosive has unique characteristics. Therefore, it is very important to make scientific research on detonation wave transmission in the design of initiators and pyrotechnics. Current small size explosive includes round section projectile filling and rectangle section projectile filling. Section length is often used to characterize projectile filling section size, for example, using diameter or radius to characterize round section and using length of rectangle to characterize rectangle section. Critical diameter, as one of the main characteristics of explosive, is influenced by detonator component, accumulation state, and particle size, etc. The experiment and numerical simulation of critical diameter of RDX compound explosive can be done from three aspects: theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental study. At present, the standard measurement of critical diameter of explode has not been available. Thus, critical diameters will be very different when the same explosive is loaded in different explosive vessels. In recent years, with the development of research methods, measurement technique and numerical simulation technique, we have achieved great progress in experimental research and numerical simulation. However, it is well-known that explosive components are one-off and cannot be used again. So from the perspective of saving cost, it is not realistic to do a great number of experiments to measure critical diameter of RDX compound explosive. Therefore, based on experimental data, numerical simulation will be a better method, especially considering the possibility that the round section projectile filling experiment can achieve success is relatively low.The effect of RDX explosive on its critical diameter at different densities has been studied systematically. Critical diameter is characterized by critical section thickness when detonation wave is finished. According to the data of wedge filling explosive, the numerical simulation with LS-DYNA3D for wedge filling and different round section fillings has been made. The result shows that the restricted condition of RDX has significant influence on the critical diameter. The critical diameter of explosive without restricted condition is larger than the explosive with restricted condition. the results of this dissertation lay the foundation for the explosive, other pyrotechnic compositions and application .
