The current studies on the abrasion resistance of refractories are mainly focused on observation of experimental phenomenon and induction of experimental data,so there is much work to do, e.g. on the analysis of phenomenon and data, erosion wear mechanism, etc. The impacts of the nature of abrasive and the factors of the test condition as well as the properties of the material under test on erosive wear properties were studied with high-strength refractory castable as target, brown corundum and silicon carbide as abrading media. In addition, erosion wear mechanism of high strength refractory castable at room temperature was discussed. At the same time, a single particle erosion model was established in the light of experimental parameters based on finite element dynamic analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, to simulate the erosion process and calculate the stresses and energy involved. The results show that:1. The maximum Von Mises stress at target center impacted by hexagon cylinder abrasive particles is four times that impacted by spheral one. The maximum Von Mise stress at the target center is increased sharply with the increase of particle size.2. Both of the maximum Von Mise stress at the target center and global total energy loss are increased with the increase of the impact angle which is more significant when the impact angle is increased larger than 45°. These calculated curves agree very well with the experiment results.3. The tested material with an increased critical particle size and proportion of coarse particles is more resistant to the erosion wear.4. There is a strictly linear relationship between the compressive and rupture strength with the erosion wear rate in this experiment, the higher the strength, the lower the erosion wear rate.5. Erosion mechanism for high strength refractory castables at room temperature is different with the impact angle which is micro-cutting with low ones and be stress fatigue with high ones.Erosion wear mechanism for refractory materials at room temperature is studied for the first time with the step erosion method by means of SEM for the first time in this paper. In addition, the changes in stress and energy under different impact angles were obtained based on the finite element method and on the single-particle erosion model. The simulation results are very consistent with experimental ones, providing a theoretical for proof for the well known rule " the maximum erosion rate of a typical brittle material appears at the vertical angle".
