According to the available standards the erosion resistance of refractories was obtained by the test on the external surface of the samples.The section of the brick body had not been taken into consideration,and therefore the wear resistance of the internal section was also rarely reported.The erosion experiment was made in which brown fused alumina accelerated by compressed air was used as abrasive,high alumina castable,high alumina refractory brick,silicon carbide product and unburt high alumina refractory brick as targets.The volume erosion rate of the section and external surface of targets had been obtained at different erosion angles,abrasive speed and erosion time;the microstructure of the samples from the experiment was investigated by SEM.The result showed that:1,The volume wear rate of external surface was bigger than that of internal section at the same erosion angle,while the difference value was smaller and smaller with increased erosion time,which due to the four kinds of refractory products was composited by characteristical “aggregates-matrix”,which resulted in the ratio of matrix was bigger than aggregates in external surface,however,the aggregates was well-distributed in internal section.2,The volume wear rate of four kinds of refractory products were increased with increased erosion angle.The volume loss at low erosion angle was mainly caused by cutting and corrosion;while that at large erosion angle was the initiation and expansion of flaw,which resulted in brittle fracture.3,The volume wear rate of four kinds of refractory products were increased with the high speed of the abrasive.The volume loss of target was very small or even none at the very low speed,but the volume wear loss of target increased rapidly as the increased speed.The volume wear rate of external surface was bigger than that of internal section at the same speed.4,The volume wear rate of four kinds of refractory products showed the different characteristics with increased erosion time for the two kinds of surfaces.For the external surface it decreased rapidly at the initial time and then tended towards stability with the increased erosion time.While that for the internal section remained unchanged with the increased erosion time.There existed two erosion processes on the external surface,which were the accelerated erosion stage and steady state erosion stage.The volume wear rate for the external surface was bigger than that for the internal section during the same erosion time.
