Modern smelting process needs composition analysis which can reflect the changes of smelt process duly and quickly, in order to achieve dynamic control and composition of adjustment, but also to estimate the end-point of smelt more accurately, to improve the species quality, and to saving energy. So direct measure the composition in the molten steel is the goal what the workers of metallurgy analysis is looking for.A brief introduction and comment of typical fast element analysis technologies were given, there features and disadvantages were summarized, and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) was proposed for fast online analysis of molten steel.Firstly, the principle and characteristics of LIBS was introduced, meanwhile, the quantitative calibration model was presented.Because of matrix effects, the impact of metallurgical structure on laser ablation properties of steel was analyzed. The result shows that metallurgical structures had influence on laser ablation properties, we need to amend when the calibration curves was constructed. The LIBS set-up for the molten steel is established, the properties of LIBS of molten steel was analyzed. The experimental parameters including the laser energy, the delay time and the number of averages were optimized, and the calibration curves was constructed , the detection limit was in 100μg/g of order of magnitude. LIBS was a powerful tool for online analysis of molten steel. Finally, a summarization was given and the suggestion and prospect were proposed for the fast analysis of metallurgy.
