Chinese classical furniture has a long history and has many treasures from the ancient craftsmen, esp. the Ming style furniture is one of the gem in the world furniture history, having glorious achievements. To this day, Chinese classical furniture still has huge market potential and value.Nowadays Chinese furniture design faces to the severe test and challenge. With the improving driving by the western furniture design tide, Chinese furniture needs mostly the steady and stability innovation and should grasp the initiative to find out well and truly the design ideas adapting to modern China, expecting to be brilliant again in the world furniture design.In searching of the Chinese modern furniture design ways, the maturity design theory is a foundation. The history is a mirror. The design ideas of Chinese classical furniture can reflect the characteristic feeling and aesthetic taste of Chinese. We should study and probe into the outstanding factors of the design ideas of Chinese classical furniture, to master the oriental makings and to follow the splendid tradition from the level of thought, not just to repeat some surface elements, such as symbols or colors, etc.China is an ancient country with prosperous civilization. It always kept a uniform and persistent culture conditions for thousands years. The furniture design ideas developed in such kind of background is the theory base and root of the Chinese classical furniture and is also the reflections of people's abundant thoughts and creation culture. This thesis reveals the origin and development of the design ideas of Chinese classical furniture. It departs the design ideas of Chinese classical furniture into four basic developing phases on a basis of holding the style features of Chinese classical furniture, that is, sprouting period, brewing period, transiting period and integrated period. The writer refers to a large number document and tries to obtain the design ideas influencing significantly to the furniture styles in every periods through the way of combining theory with practice. Based on all of that, this paper abstracts four important design ideas for selecting material, sculpting, decorating of Chinese classical furniture, that is, "Chan Buddhism Thoughts", "Virtual and Solid Mutual-promoting", "Yin Yang Mutual-supplementing" and "Artistic Flavor Vividness" etc. And it also points out one of the most important design idea in Chinese classical furniture—the artistic conception of "He".
