Heavy plate is one of the indispensable steel for the country's modernization, the types of products are various and it was used in extensive fields. Heavy plate mill is a large metallurgical equipment to produce the heavy plate, the main driving system of the mill is an important part of the equipment. Main driving system passes the power to working machine in rolling process and drive machine to finish rolling. The dynamic characteristics of the driving system will affect the service life of equipment and the quality of the product. Masterring and evaluating the dynamic characteristic of the driving system is necessary.This paper simply introduces the theory of the finite element method and the software of dynamic simulation. Based on the full understand of these softwares'traits, combining with dynamics simulation's specific requirements about mill's main driving system, the finite element software named ANSYS is reasonablely selected as the software for analysis. According to the requirement of the analysis, the finite element model of main driving system of the mill is established, and the actual physical model of this system is really simulated.Use the transfer matrix method to calculate the inherent frequency of the driving system, then use ANSYS/Structural to take modal analysis about driving system of the mill, from the results of the analysis, the natural frequency of the driving system, and the deformation nephogram of each rank modal are obtained, thus transmutation form of each rank modal is reflected intuitively. Two methods could verify the correctness of calculating and simulation.Dynamical simulation of mill's main driving system with ANSYS/LS-DYNA is also finished, this simulation really reflects the dynamic response of the components in rolling process, and gets arbitrary nodes or elements'velocity, acceleration, stress and strain etc. And analyze and summarize these results. Through the research on simulation results of mill's main driving system, point out the direction of optimization about this kind systems, and the dynamic characteristics of the driving system is analyzed and summarized too.Combinning with the production practice, torsional moment of main driving system was tested and measured the data of torsional moment during the rolling process was got. It verifies the correctness of the simulation.
