As the airport operations and the number of passengers in the airport increase faster and faster all over the world, airport APM becomes more and more popular at the airport. Airport APM is an automatic train system, established on the ground at the airport terminal or underground, in charge of transportation of the passengers. The use of the airport APM system is one of the most important factors and efficient ways to accelerate the delivery of passengers.and to improve the operating efficiency of the airport. As the system is in automatic mode, it greatly reduces the labor intensity and malfunctions caused by careless drivers,and also improves the efficiency and reliability of the system.This paper which is founded on the status of the transformation and expansion of HongKong International Airport focuses on the research and design of Automatic Train Operation in order to realize real unmanned driving of the airport APM system. Automatic Train Operation(ATO) system is a subsystem of the Automatic Train Control(ATC) system.It consists of two parts—the train carried ATO system and ground ATO system. This paper mainly reseach and design the ground ATO subsystem. On the basis of reading a great deal of ATO relevant information, study the bidding document of ground ATO subsystem in HongKong international airport APM system, analyse the technical requirement, confirm the system scheme. This paper analyse and describe the the function of the ground ATO subsystem of HongKong international airport APM system, design the function, system structure, hardware and software partly, confirm the interface of ground ATO subsystem and carried ATO system and other subsystem of APM, do the function test and reliability test, and improve the system design according to the result of test. In this paper, we design the formal product on the basis of function test and test it on the site, which is satisfied by the customer.ATO design of automatic test ground systems mentioned in this paper has been tested both at the factory and at the airport. After constantly revision and improvement, the system functions have been fully realized as well as the communication between systems and other subsystems. Research results have formed mature product with safety certification, and the test operation is already in process. The research of the airport ground ATO system has founded good reference for the domestic study of Automaic Train Operation.
