The potassium permanganate oxidation method is one of water treatment technology which can effectively remove organic pollutants, metal ions and algae from surface water, enhance coagulation and filtration and disinfect water by use of oxidation, catalysis oxidation and adsorption etc. This technology has gotten excellent results through many years of tests and research by domestic water treatment experts. This research subject is focus at the water pollution of the Yellow River in Zhengzhou Huayuankou section. The results are drawn from foreign and domestic researcher studies. The comprehensive effect of factor in potassium permanganate oxidation process and granular activate carbon adsorption process in modern water industry are determined and analyze the decontaminating mechanism of potassium permanganate and granular activated carbon combined process.Firstly, the main pollution of river water is organic matters. Through the examination on the pollutions of the Yellow River in Henan Province, the majority of the contaminates were Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Hydrocarbons, Phthalic Acid Esters, Phenolic Compounds and Heterocyclic Compounds.Secondly, phenol and nitrobenzene were chosen as model contaminates, using the residue concentration of phenols and CODMn as the prediction index to assay the removal of phenol by potassium permanganate oxidation. It was found potassium permanganate had high efficiencies for phenols removal. It also summarized several kinds of likely mechanism of potassium permanganate oxygenation. For removing nitrobenzene from water, it was found that the removal of nitrobenzene by the combination of potassium permanganate and granular activated carbon had higher efficiencies than by only potassium permanganate oxidation.Lastly, evaluates the effect of combined potassium permanganate and granular activated carbon for the removal of organic pollutants from surface water. To meet the water quality, 1.2 mg/L potassium permanganate, 10 mg/L ferrous sulfate need to be added for the treatment. Some other effect of combined potassium permanganate and granular activated carbon for the removal of pollutants from water were also investigated by means of GC/MS analysis and by the Ames test. The results showed that it can achieve satisfactory removal of most organic pollutants and can reduce the activity of lethal mutation significantly.
