At present, the power system is lack of var compensation, furthermore most compensation methods for the compensation devices are not good enough to meet the requirement of compensation for power system. STATCOM is an appropriate solution of these problems. STATCOM is a new type of reactive power compensator, which can strengthen the stability of the power system and enhance the capacity to transmit electricity, thus it has been widely used all over the world.The paper introduces the performance parameters and the fundamental principle of a new type power electronic switch named Integrated Gate Commute Thyristor(IGCT), design of the protection of the IGCT when over voltage and current.Secondly, the main circuit configuration of STATCOM are introduced, analyzes the requirements for protection system, designs the protection system of STATCOM; and introduces the application of pulse blocking protection method in STATCOM in detail.Finally, the principle of two-level space vector PWM(SVPWM) is introduced, and based on it, the principle of the three-level space voltage vector modulating technique is studied in detail, presents the formulas about PWM pulse and the order of switches action .The order of switches action is also optimized in this text, the correctness of this method is validated by MATLAB emulation, and realizes the method by the DSP TMS320F2812.
