The same as the active power, reactive power places a very important role in guarantee the quality of the energy supply and the voltage of power system. Also, it is important to reduce the power losses and for the power system security. Parallel capacitors are widely used for power system reactive power compensation. However, traditional way used to realize control and protection of the parallel capacitors is that those two functions are separately realized which presents difficulty in the realization. Also, the traditional wire and wireless communication used in distribution network is lack of data transmission stability. Therefore, it is valuable to develop new integrated device which combines the functions of both the control and the protection. A scheme of such device is proposed and realized by use of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The state of application for reactive power optimization and control, as well as the scheme used to design a GPRS based integrated device of reactive power compensation control and protection are presented in the thesis at first. The main contents of the thesis are as follows.The theory of compensation by parallel capacitors is analyzed. Control and protection methods for compensation capacitors are summarized. The wireless communication used in distribution network is introduced. Based on the results of the above mentioned analysis, the design scheme for an integrated device of reactive power compensation control and protection is given.The hardware configuration of the developed device is given in thre thesis including the CPU board, the MMI board and the TV/TA power board.The radio frequency and the GPRS technology are used to design the remote monitoring system. The theory of radio frequency GSM/CSD (Global System of Mobile communication/Circuit Switched Data) and GPRS and their application in power system are briefly specified. The communication system design scheme is proposed and analysed in detail. Valuable results are obtained.The system structure of the software module and the functions of each part of the developed system are presented in the thesis in detail. The software consisted of the monitoring system and the embedded control software.
