Fast development of electric railway brings in some inevitable technical problems. As a result of adopting AC-DC locomotive, the access of traction power supply system influences the power quality of grid. The national standard of power quality cannot be achieved in some substations in China. At present, fixed compensator is widely used to compensate reactive power primarily, but the performance is worked on the load fluctuation and power reactive metering means by the power department. So, applying SVC becomes a kind of trend to dynamically compensate the reactive power induced by traction load.Most of the documents analyzing SVC are aimed to the application in grid. Even some harmonic problems are only considering its characteristic. Based on the immense measured data in the field of several substations, this paper discusses the traction load characters of low power factor, large harmonic content, high negative sequence content, analyzes its effect in reactive power and negative sequence current compensating, harmonic suppression. Furthermore, influencing factors are carried out to be considered in the design and operation of SVC in electric railway.A traction substation simulation model with TCR-FC type SVC is built by EMTDC/PSCAD. And this paper analyzed the function of the factors (such as, power system, traction transformer, and SVC design parameters.) to the SVC performance, discussed the causes to fault and offered an advice to solve the problem.
