| OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of psychological intervention on anxiety, depression, sexual function, and quality of life among patients who are younger than 45 years old and undergoing total hysterectomy for uterine leiomyomas, and to evaluate the effects of psychological intervention. METHODS: 90 women were selected under the condition of this study. 46 women were chosen randomly from 90 women as the psychological intervention group, and 44 women as the control group. The intervention group received both total hysterectomy and psychological intervention which included supportive therapy, health education, individual psychotherapy, and, family and social supportive therapy during hospitalization. The control group only received total hysterectomy. All women were evaluated by SAS, SDS, WHOQOL-100 on the first day of hospitalization; by SAS, SDS one day before operation, and by SAS, SDS, Sexual Function Questionnaire, WHOQOL-100 half a year after operation. Both two groups' variation of anxiety, depression, sexual function, and quality of life were observed. RESULTS: There were obvious mood disturbances among patients who are younger than 45 years old and undergoing total hysterectomy for uterine leiomyomas. Half a year after operation, some facets in quality of life got worse-sex, human relations, etc. Psychological intervention can ameliorate women'sanxiety and depression significantly, improve the quality and satisfaction of sex significantly, and can improve some facets in quality of life significantly-self-esteem, bodily appearance, human relations, social support, and overall health status, etc. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that it is important for gynecologists to recognize and find out patient's psychiatric disorders associated with hysterectomy for uterine leiomymas . Then the use of psychological intervention is needed in the clinical gynecology to reduce or even eliminate the patient's psychiatric disorders, and to improve quality of life. |
