Objective To observe the clinical effect and protection of vascular endothelial cells of Maixinkang Capsule (MXKC) on hyperlipidemia. Methods Forty cases of patients with hyperlipidemia were divided randomly into MXKC group (20cases) and control group (20cases). The patients in MXKC group and control group were treated with MXKC and xuezhikang respectively. The changes of clinical symptoms , laboratory indexes and Flow-mediated dilation(FMD) of brachial artery in all the patients were observed before and after treatment. Thirty-six rats with hyperlipidemia were divided randomly into MXKC group (12 rats ) , control group (12 rats) and model group (12 rats). The three groups were fed with high fat diet.MXKC group and control group were given MXKC and xuezhikang respectively. Laboratory indexes in all the rats were determined. Results After the fifty days' treatment with MXKC, the serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride(TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] in the patients decreased .And the reduction of TG of MXKC was better than that of xuezhikang.After the treatment,clinical symptoms were effectively improved.The total effective rateand marked effective rate of relieving symptoms, and the total effective rate of reducing lipids were 95% ,85%and 90% respectively.The marked effectiv rate of MXKC group was superior to that of control group(P<0.05).Meanwhile,the endothelin (ET), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), oxidized low density lipoprotein (OX-LDL), ET / calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)and ET/nitric oxide (ET/NO) levels in MXKC group lowered markedly, and NO levels and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) rose obviously. FMD was also improved after the treatment in both groups.Animal experiment showed that MXKC had similar effects of lowering lipid levels, resisting lipid peroxidation and regulating secretions of vaso-active substances. Conclusions MXKC could effectively relieve clinical symptoms, reduce blood lipid levels and protect vascular endothelial cells. The therapeutic mechanism of protecting vascular endothelial cells might be associated with modulating lipid metabolism and resisting lipid peroxidation.
