Objective: To determine Matrix metalloproteinase-3 serum levels in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and its related influence factor, provide new method for diagnosis and therapy.Method: MMP-3 serum levels were determined by ELISA in 47 patients with early RA. The serum levels of AKA, APF, ESR, RF, anti-CCP and hand X-ray were measured at the same time. To analysis the levels of MMP-3 in 10 RA patients before and after treatment.Result: Serum levels of MMP-3 were obvious higher than normal matched control( P<0. 01), but there were no difference in men and women . MMP-3 level positive correlated with number of the damage joint, Staging of X-ray and ESR levels; But they have no obvious relation with age, the disease course, time of morning stiffness, Staging of function, and RF, AKA, APF, anti- CCP levels. In differentperiod with X-ray, the levels of MMP-3 were also different, especially between I andll , land III( P < 0.05). the levels of MMP-3, ESR and RF can descend(P < 0. 01) after treatment, and the ESR descent rate is biggest. Conclusion: Though RA has individual difference, MMP-3 can be used as a sign of disease activity. In the period of X- I to II, the MMP-3 levels increase most obviously. That shows that if the high level MMP-3 occur in the serum, the cartilaginous breakage should be noticed, and early interference should be given.
