Objective: To determine the relative important factors influencing the prognosis of patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Methods: we conduct a retrospective study. Before mechanical ventilation, we collected data of 69 patients who received mechanical ventilation more than 24 hours and are older than 20 years regardless of their disease. The patients who could breathe freely without receiving mechanical ventilation are taken into group of success. The patients who did not wean from mechanical ventilation and left hospital are regarded as group of failure. The univariate analysis and a multivariate analysis were performed to determine the relative factors which influencing the prognosis of patients receiving mechanical ventilation.Result: Univariate analysis revealed that the most important predictors of mechanical ventilation failure were, blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin, red blood, coma, breathe and heart arrest, and multiorgan dysfunction. The multivariate analysis showed that factors independently associated with an increased mechanical ventilation failure were multiorgan system failure and coma. ROS curve revealed that Glasgow index ≤6 predicts mechanical ventilation failure. Conclusion: we had better conduct mechanical ventilation before coma appears. And we could reinforce alimentaion, prevent and treat multiorgan system failure to increase the survival rate of patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
