Objective: Simple obesity is a chronic disease and is difficult to treat. Modern biomedicine has not yet shown promising treatments for simple obesity. However, the anti-obesity medications cause undesirable side-effects and also fail to show their long term effects. Other treatment modalities which havebeen used for simple obesity however are lacking of systemic studies. This study is attempting to seek a long term effective and convenient treatment, without side-effects such as lassitude, diarrhea, and addictions, for simple obesity. To be discussed will be the mechanism of acupuncture treatment for simple obesity being based on the level of lipaemia of the patient, and to observe the moxibustion and warming needle affectivity on high lipaemia obesity patients' body mass index (BMI), body weight, and level of lipaemia. Method: According to " Shi Shi Mi Lu" : "The obese patient tends to have phlegm accumulation which is due to Qi deficiency. When Qi is deficient, spleen fails to perform its transformation and transportation functions. Therefore, internal phlegm will he generated. Thus, the obesity patient most often exhibits a pattern as an excess manifestation with underlying deficiency. The main cause is due to the "Spleen Qi [being obstructed] by the excessive damp-phegm. " There is a saying in TCM "obesity person has lots of phlegm" , as well as "obesity person has lots of dampness" . Damp-phlegm are the yin pathogenic factor. The application of warmth can dissolve the Yin pathogen. Therefore, moxibustion with warming neddle technique can be utilized in the treatment of obesity. In our clinical research study, 63 obesity patients who have hyperlipoproteinemia were divided into two groups randomly. One group of the obesity palients was treated with moxibustion and warming needle, while the other group was administrated with Xenical (Orlistat) orally. The treatment lasted for eight weeks. The BMI and blood serum lipid were used...
