Object The purpose of the study was to determine new bone formation effects in canine mandibular alveolar defects using native bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) combined with collagen I and nature coral.Methods The composite consists of native extracted reindeer BMPs and type I collagen as a carrier and nature coral as a frame.These materials were implanted in the right mandibular alveolar defects (5x3x2mm) in 4 dogs.the left defects without any material were studied as controls.The animals were sacrificed at eight weeks after surgery and the specimen were examined by radiography,histology (under light microscope and scanning electron microscope).Result The amount of bone formation in the test sides were better which showing more complete bone fill of alveolar defects than contral sides in 3 dogs, and there was no significant difference of bone recovery between two sides in 1 dog.The histology examination showed that the implants were mostly absorbed after being implanted into the defects for 8 weeks. The microscope examination also showed that in the test sides there were a large number of osteoblasts and eosinophilic matrices,and the defects were full filled with new-forming bone. In contrast,there were abundant fibroblasts with less new bone formed in the areas of the bone defects without any bioimplantants.At 8 weeks,the induced bone lacked of mature trabeculae arrangement compared to the resident bone.Under scanning electron microscope muture osteoblasts within osseous lacunae were observed.Conclussion The native BMPs/collagen-1 /coral composite plays a highly significant role in promoting reparation of alveolar defects and may be an ideal material for clinical application.
