Objective:In this study we investigated the potential relationship between theexpression of the cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and P-glycoprotein(P-gp) in gastriccancer and weather cox-2 is a independent prognostic factor in gastric cancinoma. Methods: The expression of COX-2 and P-gp in 79 cases of randomly collectedgastric adenocarcinoma were detected by immunohistochemical technique. Therelationship between cox-2 and P-gp/TNM stage were analyzed by Kendall's tau-bCorrelation.The prognostic impact of the factors were analyzed by univariate analysisand logistic regression analysis.Result: Positive rate of COX-2,P-gp expression in gatric cancer are 56.9%(45/79),64.6%(51/79) respectively. There is a strong positive correlation between theexpression of COX-2 and P-gp in human gastric cancer. The expression of COX-2have nothing to do with TNM stage in gastric cancer.Univariate analysis showed thatage, sex, cox-2 had prognostic significances for survial (x2 test, P <0.05), whilemultivariate Logistic analysis indicated that sex , cox-2 and TNM stage wereindependent prognostic factors for survival. Conclusion: The expression of COX-2 is correlated to the expression of P-gp ingastric cancer, which suggests that there may exist further relationship betweenCOX-2 and P-gp in the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer. The expression of COX-2have nothing to do with TNM stage in gastric cancer,COX-2 may be a independentprognostic factor in gastric cancer.
