Background and objective: Chronic cough is a common problem in children. The mechanism for this phenomenon remain largely unknown. It is difficut to diagnose chronic cough. We want to assess airway hyperresponsiveness of younger children with chronic cough.. Methods: 10 asthmatic younger children ,20 younger children with chronic cough ,10 healthy age matched volunteers were included. All were conducted methacholine inhalation challenge to assess airway hyperresponsiveness with aiway resistance and oxygen saturation. Result: 1. Bronchial provations of 10 healthy younger children were negative, which indicated no airway hyperresponsiveness. 2. Bronchial provations of 10 ashmatic younger children were positive, which indicated airway hyperresponsiveness. 3. 12 of 20 younger children with chronic cough which were conducted bronchial provation were positve, compared with asthmatic group was no significant difference in airway hyperresponsiveness. Conclusion: Methacholine inhalation challenge is a safe and effective method to assess airway hyperresponsiveness in younger children.A proportion of younger children with chronic cough were shown to exhibit airway hyperresponsiveness.
