Background & Objective Insulin-like growth factors(IGFs) can strongly stimulate the proliferation of a variety of cells, including the retinal cell and the scleral cell.IGF1 adjusts the synthesize and secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), affects the synthesize of extracellular matrix (ECM) and relates the occurance of myopia .IGFBP3 is the most binding protein and adjusts the function of IGF1. This study was to discuss the possible role of IGF1 and IGFBP3 in myopia development. We examined the expression levels of IGF1 and IGFBP3 in serum of the children with myopia and control subjects and elucidated the relationship between myopia and some clinical characteristic factors .Methods Sixty-six cases with myopia and thirty healthy controls were included in this study. Serum IGF1 and IGFBP3 levels were measured with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Vision,Optic axis, keratorefractive power and Dioptre were measured also. Results Optic axis in myopia was significantly higher compared with that of controls (p<0.05) .Serum IGF1 level (287.78±107.79ng/ml)in myopia was significantly higher compared with that of controls (185.66±64.44ng/ml, P<0.01). But there was no significant difference (p>0.05)in serum IGFBP3 level between myopia (3890.35±1328.12ng/ml) and controls (3804.03±1596.27ng/ml). Serum IGF1 level was positively correlated with the optic axis and the degree of myopia and serum IGFBP3 level, and it was negatively correlated with the Dioptre (p<0.05). Serum IGFBP3 level was no correlated with the optic axis and the degree of myopia (p>0.05).Conclusion The study suggested that IGF1 play important roles in the occurence and development of myopia .Serum examination of it may have potential clinical value.IGFBP3 played no role in the occurance of myopia . The study also proved that the optic axis elongation with myopia in children may be the major factor. |
