Objective: To investigate the expression of CD44v6 in primary gastric carcinoma and its possible role in tumorigenesis and development, so as to provide theoretical basis for diagnose, therapy and prognosis. Methods: 2 normal gastric samples,63 cases of gastric carcinoma and their corresponding paracancerous tissue and distant-tumor tissue were used for detection. Immunohistochemical staining for CD44v6 protein was performed with SP method. The results were associated with clinical pathological data.Results:(1)CD44v6 was expressed in the membrane and nearby cytoplasm of cancer cells. CD44v6 was detected in 60.32% (38/63) of gastric carcinoma. CD44v6 was not expressed in normal gastric, paracancerous tissue and distant-tumor tissue. (2)The expression of CD44v6 protein was significantly higher in gastric carcinoma with lymph node metastasis than without(P<0.05). (3)The expression of CD44v6 protein was positively related to invasion depth(rs=0.4353) and clinical TNM stage(rs=0.4883). (4)The expression of CD44v6 was no correlation with sex, age, tumor size, location, pathological type, distant-orgen metastasis, Lauren's and Borrmann's classification. Conclusion: The expression of CD44v6 protein was significantly high in gastric carcinoma. The expression of CD44v6 protein was positively related to invasion depth and clinical TNM stage. CD44v6 protein may play an important role in progression and metastatic potential of gastric cancer, and may be a biologic marker of gastric cancer.
