Objectives: To investigate the differences of BAEP, auditory sensory gating P50 (P50) and P300 in the between na?ve schizophrenia and the normal control, and the relations with their clinical symptoms. To understand the value of BAEP, sensory gating P50 and P300 in diagnosis on na?ve schizophrenia. Methods: All BAEP, P50, and P300 were recorded from 31 na?ve schizophrenia patients and 32 normal controls using American Nicolet Bravo instrument, and assessing their symptoms with the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) at the same time.Results:1. No differences were found in the main markers ofâ…¢-â…¤/â… -â…¢inter-peak latency (IPL) andâ…¤/â… amplitude ratio in BAEP between the na?ve schizophrenia and normal controls(P>0.05).2. Compared to normal controls, the na?ve schizophrenia have sensory gating deficit, which could be reflected by higher S2/S1, lower S1-S2, and more decreased 1-S2/S1 (P<0.01).3. Compared to normal controls, the na?ve schizophrenia have more decreased P3 amplitude of P300 (P<0.01) and more prolonged N1,P2,N2,P3 latencies and nontarget N1 latencies and more decreased nontarget P2 amplitudes of P300 (P<0.05~0.01).4. No significant correlations were found between three markers of S2/S1 ratio, S1-S2, and 1-S2/S1 in P50, reflecting the function condition of brain sensory gating and PANSS scale. Target N1 latency of P300 related with PANSS total scale, general psychopathology scale, negative scale negatively; Target P2 latency related with general scale and blunt reaction, and nontarget N1 latency negatively with negative scale, and general psychopathology scale and blunt reaction; Nontarget P2 latency negatively with PANSS total score, negative scale, general psychopathology scale, blunt reaction, and excitement.5. Principal component analysis revealed that five markers of S2/S1 ratio, S1-S2, 1-S2/S1 of P50, P3 latency and amplitude of P300 could discriminate na?ve schizophrenia from normal controls.Conclusions:1. The na?ve schizophrenics have normal brainstem function, suggesting their auditory pathway might be not related with schizophrenia.2.The schizophrenics have sensory gating deficit, which could be quantified by P50. Three formula of S2/S1 ratio, S1-S2, and (1-S2/S1) of P50 could reflect the function condition of brain sensory gating. The na?ve schizophrenics have cognitive dysfunction reflecting by abnormalities...
