| PurposeThe value of the routine use of total gastrectomy (TG) in the treatment of upper part stomach cancer remains controversial. The objectors contend that the routine use of TG increases both operative mortality and morbidity and the risk of nutritional deficiency in the long term, without improving survival. TG may also be associated with poorer outcome in terms of quality of life (QOL).The aim of this study was to compare quality of life after total gastrectomy with that after subtotal gastrectomy(proximal and distal,PSG&DSG) for gastric carcinoma and to analyse the factors affecting QOL after TG.Patients and MethodsFrom 2002 to 2005 ,107 patients underwent gastrectomy (30 after TG,42 after DSG and 35 after PSG) at the Department of General Surgery of the Qilu hospital were enrolled into this study. The EORTC quality of life questionnaire QLQ-STO20(Quality of Life Core Questionnaire of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of stomach Cancer) was used in the present retrospective study to assess quality of life of gastric cancer patients following radical surgical procedures. |
