Qindaisan (QDS) is a tranditional Chinese prescription. It possesses "heat-clearing and dampness drying" and anti-diarrhea functions and is used for Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in clinical practice. Our study was aimed to provide the modern pharmacological evidence for QDS in the treatment of UC and to approach its functional mechanism. UC models in rats induced by xenogenic colonic antigen, dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) or trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) were established in this study.First, the effects of QDS on the development of xenogenic colonic antigen induced UC in rats were evaluated. The data showed that when administered orally, QDS significantly ameliorated clinical and histological signs of the disease. These entailed a significant reduction of the number of colonic ulcer and edema, an obvious increase in colon weights, a reduction of serum LDH content and milder colon mucosa damage. In DNCB-induced UC in rats, the colonic mucosal damage score was significantly decreased after having been treated with QDS for a week. The administration of DNCB increased the level of NO in colonic tissue, but this change was attenuated by the treatment of QDS. The treatment of QDS also prevented the increase of the content of MDA in colonic tissue and significantly...
