| Caries is one of the most prevalent oral diseases. The prevention of it is the main point of preventive dentistry research. With the population aging, the incidence of root caries related to the physiologically gingival atrophy and the root exposure by periodontal surgery increased rapidly and becomes one of most important diseases do harm to the oral health of the aged people. Thus it is emphasized how to prevent and cure the root caries.Root caries mainly occur in aged people because of the retrace or atrophy of the gingiva. Due to the low efficiency of the self cleaning action, the plaque is very easy to cohere to the root surface which results in low resistance to the caries. With the progression, cementum demineralized and softened into root caries which mostly appear in the proximal and buccal surface of enamel-cementum conjunction. The early stage appears as one of several yellow point with apparent border, with the procession goes on, it becomes yellow or brown, sharp and firm in the surface, sometimes the caries appear leather like and ablate lamellar when scrapped. In clinical, the root caries are observed expand horizontally and show a shallow patellate appearance, sometimes even circle the whole root. Thus it's significant to prevent the advance of root caries.The Chinese nutgall contains affluent digallic acid which shows a good character of antibiotics. It has been proved that the Chinese nutgall can prevent the occurrence of dentin and enamel caries efficiently, similar to that of 2% NaF. However, there are no detailed researches of the effect of Chinese nutgall on root caries. |
