Schistosomiasis And Local Society In Jiangxi Province (1912-1959)

Schistosomiasis is one of the most serious endemic diseases in our province, it harms enormously .Based on the social investigation, this article uses nimbly most of discipline theories such as history,sociology,medicine, and fully explores the compare-analysis method, synthesis-induction method, measurement-analysis method and so on. We discuss not only schistosomiasis itself, but also the interaction between schistosomiasis and local society.From the Republic of China to 1950's, the broad prevalence scope ,high infection percentage , the diverse infection way of the schistosomiasis is surprising, it spreads more than 30 counties in our province. Except for Jiangxi's physical geography and the social politics background,the medical health background, biology factor, the famine factor, the population mobile factor, the custom factor are also the causes why the schistosomiasis spreads seriously. The prevalence of the schistosomiasis brings various influence, including population vicissitude, the village economy, the ecological environment and so on. Facing schistosomiasis, stemming from the instinct which seek livehood, the common people took many methods: praying for the God, calling the soul, offering a sacrifice to the port, setting bans, wearing red waistband; seeing doctor blindly, family emigrating. While some people may choose suicide to extrication .Regarding government, blindness to the serious problem always caused their ignorance, sometimes, to manifests national function, the government also takes little efforts, just as the Republic of China government. 1950's, because of their sober realization and emphasis, the government has adopted the independent top-down behavior: carrying through schistosomiasis survey, propagandizing schistosomiasis knowledge, constituting the corresponding preventive and layout, put up the study on the prevention and cure of schistosomiasis, mobilizing people to prevent the disease, etc. this is a true significant people's war against the schistosomiasis, which made our province to be the glory model on the controlling schistosomiasis, and it provide apocalypse to the present people.
