Emodin (3-methyl-1,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone) is an active compound of many laxative herbal drugs, such as aloe, senna, and rhubarb. As a protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor,Emodin shows a variety of biologic effects,it can induce cancer cells apoptosis, exhibit immunosuppressive and inhibit the metastasis and invasion of cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer and the second leading cause of male cancer deaths in the developed countries. And more Asian men are suffering from this disease in recent years. Prostate cancer is very heterogeneous in its etiology and progression. And androgen signal appears to be a commen key element in its development and progression.Today, androgen ablation is a standard therapy for prostate cancer.Unfortunately, after a initial response to androgen deprivation therapy, prostate cancer usually recurs in a form that is unresponsive to further treatment.Today many scientist are enthusiastic to explore new therapeutic targets for a more sufficent and long lasting therapy for prostate cancer patients.Emodin,as a traditional Chinese herb, which have received greatly attention recently as apoptois inducer, may have clinical application in the preventionof prostate cancer. The molecule mechanisms of Emodin action include effects on a number of signaling pathways and transcription factors. However large gaps still exist in our knowledge of...
