Purpose : To analyze the causes of liver cirrhosis and their changes in recent years in the Second Affiliated Clinical college of Chongqing University of Medical Sciences. Methods: 824 inpatients with liver cirrhosis (Jan1994 to Dec2004) were investigated retrospectively. Results: 504cases were caused by the infection of hepatitis B virus. 31 cases were caused by NASH and 73 cases were caused by alcohol. Two factors (hepatitis B virus and alcohol) existed in 152 patients . The patients were divided into two groups of before-Jan2000 and after-Jan2000, and the above etiological factors were further analyzed. It was found that the incidence of alcoholic cirrhosis increased from 2.49% to 12.92%, also the incidence of cirrhosis caused by NASH increased from 1.56% to 5.19%. But the incidence of cirrhosis caused by HBV was decreased from 66.67% to 57.65%.Conclusion: It is suggested that HBV is still the major cause of liver cirrhosis in China. Cirrhosis caused by alcohol and NASH reveals a tendency of increase, to which more attention should be paid.
